Because studios make shit like Meet the Spartans and audiences reward them with 18 million dollar #1 movie of the week box office. We don’t normally do numbers here at BC but this is just too much, particularly when one considers the wealth of pictures that are currently playing in the theatres. Hell, even Rambo, which I’ll get into tomorrow, is preferrable to this. Who watches that Spartans trailer and says “Hmm, that looks good”?

You know, not everyone has to be a movie snob, but I wish people would show at least a tiny bit of critical thinking when they see movies.
The hoots of laughter for the trailer for the new Larry the Cable Guy movie tell me this isn’t going to happen any time soon.
I guess after the remarkable year of 2007, it’s silly of me to complain too loudly.

I’ll tell you who: people who don’t read columns like this.

Good point. Though I’d like to think columns such as mine aren’t necessary in alerting people to the awfulness of things like Spartans. Maybe I’m wrong.

The major studios are all essentially fast food joints now.
Disney/McDonald’s,
Universal/Burger King,
Warner Bros/Taco Bell,
Sony/KFC,
Paramount/Wendy’s
New Line/Pizza Hut,
Fox/Arby’s
UA/Chick-Fil-A.
I can’t remember whether Meet The Spartans was KFC or Arby’s.
Lionsgate is Subway Sandwiches because while they still make junk, they also produced 3:10 To Yuma when no one else would. That was sort of like that 500 pound dude who supposedly lost half his weight on Subway products. Good community service there!

I like that Joe. We should be fair to Wendy’s though and acknowledge that they at least partially backed There Will Be Blood.

I’ve noticed since the Mini Majors have come along, the Fox Searchlights, the Paramount Vantages etc., most of what comes out under the main studio banner is, as Joe says, Fast Food crap.
I guess as long as good movies are still being made and seen, it doesn’t matter who puts them out, but it’s depressing to remember that ‘good’ movies are mostly a niche market.
